About the position
A PhD position, fully funded for three years, is available at the Department of Biology of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim.
The Vandegehuchte lab is part of the Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution (BEE) section. The BEE section investigates ecological and evolutionary patterns and processes underpinning biodiversity, scaling from genes to communities and ecosystems, and how these are affected by environmental change. The BEE section is a collaborative, vibrant, and growing research community including 12 Associate Professors and Professors, 23 PhD candidates, researchers, and postdocs, and 4 engineers. As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work toward your doctorate, while gaining valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, both in- and outside of academia.
The PhD supervisor will be Associate Professor Martijn L. Vandegehuchte.
About the project
The position is associated with StrawberryWalls, an interdisciplinary project funded by the Research Council of Norway, involving research groups at NTNU in plant ecology (Associate Professor Martijn L. Vandegehuchte), plant molecular biology (Professor Thorsten Hamann) and physics (Professor Bjørn Stokke) and at the University of Tromsø in plant physiology (Professor Kirsten Krause).
The project will investigate how woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) and its infection by field dodder (Cuscuta campestris) and northern root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne hapla) are affected by temperature changes. Both the parasitic plant and the nematode are spreading northward and causing severe damage to crops. The PhD candidate will perform full-factorial common garden experiments to test how plant performance is determined by plant genotype, the environment (above- and belowground parasite and warming in different combinations and sequences), and their interaction. Plant performance will be assessed by measuring life history traits and fitness and using hyperspectral imaging of both roots and shoots. The performance of both parasites will also be quantified. Collaborators on the project will use Brillouin microscopy for in vivo study of changes in the mechanical properties of plant cell walls, which have been implied in responses to the two parasites. We will also use the model species thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) as a resource to help identify the molecular mechanisms and genes underlying responses to altered temperatures and parasite (co-)infection. We will then identify homologs of candidate genes in the fully sequenced F. vesca genome and use CRISPR-CAS to test their function in similar experiments with different combinations of altered temperature and added parasites.
The main work of the PhD candidate entails quantitative genetics experiments testing for G×E. The interdisciplinary nature of the project provides a unique opportunity to obtain additional training in cutting-edge imaging techniques and molecular methods to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms and genes at play.
Duties of the position
- Complete the doctoral education (30 ECTS credits)
- Carry out high-quality research within the framework described above

About the position
In this position, you will explore how modern learning-based control and perception methods can enhance the autonomy and precision of underwater manipulation operations, such as valve turning and retrieving objects from the sea floor. You will investigate techniques for robust perception in challenging underwater environments, including visual (and acoustic) sensing to enable reliable object detection, scene understanding, and interaction. You will thus contribute toward the ultimate goal of enabling the next generation of underwater robots to perform complex manipulation tasks fully autonomously – a key capability for subsea exploration, maintenance, and repair. This position is part of the Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI.
The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Kristin Y. Pettersen, with Professor Annette Stahl as co-supervisor.
About the project
Join a nation-wide team: The Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI (NCEI), one of Norway’s six national AI centres, is recruiting outstanding researchers to advance a universal science of embodied intelligence. NCEI brings together leading robotics and AI groups with key partners from industry and the public sector to study how intelligence emerges from the interaction between body, computation, and environment, across flying, ground, and aquatic robot configurations. Our mission is to chart a generalisable path for physical AI and transform how robot morphology and autonomy are co-designed, enabling new generations of systems tailored to their operational environments and missions. Successful candidates will join an international community with world-class facilities and strong collaborations across Norwegian universities, research institutes, industry, public agencies, and leading global institutions. We welcome motivated applicants in robotics, control, AI, machine learning, physics, and related fields, including early-stage researchers eager to contribute to this emerging scientific frontier.
Duties of the position
- Complete your doctoral education leading to the PhD degree.
- Conduct and publish research of high-quality within the framework described above.
- Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays abroad.
- Collaborate with other researchers within the department, and across departments at NTNU.
- Supervise master’s thesis students related to the project.
- Upon agreement with the candidate and the department, the position may be extended if the candidate undertakes career-enhancing work beyond the research project, such as teaching duties.
Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a Master's degree in cybernetics, control systems, or equivalent, with a strong training in control of marine vehicles and/or robots. Additional training in machine learning methods is an advantage. Your degree must correspond to a five-year Norwegian program, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. About the position
Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.
In today’s digital world, extremely large amounts of content overwhelms users, and it becomes a challenge for the end users to find the most suitable content for themselves. Recommender systems help users to find the most relevant items according to their browsing history and personal preferences. Today, recommender systems are frequently used and embedded in many digital services regardless of the domain. While these systems aim to help people by suggesting the most suitable content, the concerns about their effects on people and society becomes more prevalent. Especially in domains like job recommendations, which could have a direct effect on people’s life, it becomes extremely important to pay attention to concepts like fairness.
Fairness is a subjective concept and changes according to the domain, context and point of reference, which makes it an interesting and challenging research problem. In addition, fairness is not a standalone concept and has close connections to diversity, transparency and bias. In this position, the PhD candidate will work on algorithmic fairness in job recommender systems, collaborating with Vend AS that operates FINN.no. The candidate is expected to develop a good understanding of the general domain of fairness in recommender systems and extend their research to the domain-specific features of job recommendations. The candidate is expected to develop and test recommender systems, therefore good programming skills are required.
Your immediate leader will be the group leader of the Data and Artificial Intelligence unit at the Department of Computer Science.

Currently the center concentrates their activities on three domains: Finance, Media, and Industry 4.0.
The NorwAI consortium consists of 17 partners from industry, universities and research institutes. The PhD candidate will work in cooperation with the partners of NorwAI , but also with PhD candidates and other postdoctoral fellows at the center and the department as a whole.
