The Department of Social Sciences and Business
ISE conducts excellent, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research based on anthropology, business studies, development studies, economics, legal studies, political science, and sociology. We offer an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment characterized by academic and methodological diversity in research and education. Our faculty put a strong emphasis on research methodologies and are dedicated to gaining insights into businesses and society in diverse contexts of change and global engagement. We produce research at the highest international level that feeds into our educational programmes, while simultaneously leveraging our research to impact social, economic, and political change. Research in the department is organized in research groups. The selected candidate is expected to join Crossroads of Care and Social Reproduction (CARE). Read more about the department here.
The position
The postdoc will be part of the interdisciplinary 5-year research project “Mapping and Conceptualizing Maternal Rights during Pregnancy, Birth, and the Postpartum Period (MaMas)” funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant of EUR 1,5 million and led by principal investigator (PI) Céline Brassart Olsen. European Research Council grants are competitive EU funds for excellent, frontier research focusing on groundbreaking ideas and scientific excellence.
The MaMas project combines law and anthropology to uncover women’s rights and experiences of rights during the transition of becoming a mother. The postdoc will be part of a supportive, interdisciplinary team, and will work closely with the principal investigator and collaborate with a postdoc in anthropology and a PhD in health and human rights. The postdoc will be affiliated with Roskilde University’s interdisciplinary research group Crossroads of Care and Social Reproduction (CARE), which conducts research on social reproduction and care. The postdoc will have the opportunity to advance their academic skills and career as part of this interdisciplinary research project and will be part of an international network of collaborators in Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The overall aim of the MaMas project is to develop the first legal framework of maternal rights during the interconnected times of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Using comparative, socio-legal methods, MaMas maps and analyses rights in health, labour, and welfare laws at international, European, and national levels. At national level, the project focuses on three selected Welfare European countries: Denmark, France, and the United Kingdom (England). The goal is to uncover which rights women have during the transition of becoming a mother, and to identify potential gaps and fragmentation across the different legal regimes.
Through qualitative methods, it investigates women’s awareness and experience of rights during this time in various spaces (health-care facilities, workplaces, home, and public spaces). Based on the legal and qualitative analyses, the project identifies gaps in the current legal approach, develops new legal language and concepts, and re-imagines maternal rights from women’s vantage point.
The postdoc will map and investigate women’s health, labour, and welfare rights during the transition of becoming a mother. The position requires the ability to engage with and analyze legal and regulatory frameworks including from a comparative perspective between Denmark, England and/or France. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to collaborate closely with the PI and postdoc in anthropology for the design of questionnaires for interviews, and to attend some interviews with mothers to understand their awareness and lived experience of rights.
The ideal candidate has experience with conducting in-depth analysis of health, labor and/or social laws and policies in European welfare states, preferably Denmark or another Scandinavian country, and has some knowledge of comparative methods. However, another evaluation criterion is that the candidate is genuinely interested in interdisciplinarity, particularly qualitative methods from anthropology such as interviews, as well as in critical legal theory and feminist theory. They must be able to demonstrate that they can take responsibility for the research on maternal rights in dialogue with the PI and in close collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. They also need to show relevant research skills and methodological competencies that enable them to make an independent contribution to the project.
Responsibilities and tasks
A postdoc at ISE is expected to;
- conduct and publish research at the highest international level
- participate in research groups, seminars and other relevant activities

- collaborate with the PI and team to develop a research design rooted in critical legal theory and critical maternal theory
- map and analyse women’s health, welfare and labor rights during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period at international, European, and national levels - primarily in Denmark, and in England and/or France
- conduct comparative analysis of maternal rights in the selected countries
- in collaboration with the PI and the postdoc in anthropology, share and translate the analysis of maternal rights to inform the design of interviews and ethnographic work, and incorporate qualitative data into the analysis of rights
- present findings at international conferences in law, social legal studies, and gender policy
- organize and participate in activities related to the MaMas project, including group meetings, workshops with academics and stakeholders (e.g. midwives, employers, parents, policymakers)
The ideal candidate possesses good communication skills and will be visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

- Skills in workshop facilitation and stakeholder engagement
- Strong academic writing skills in English
- The ability to work independently as well as collaborate with other members of the research team
It is advantageous if the candidate has experience with research in health-, welfare- or labor law and policy, gender policy, comparative legal/policy analysis, and an interest in feminist legal theory and social reproduction theory. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with interdisciplinary profiles, including those working at the intersection of law, gender, and public policy. At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, one or more positions as PhD stipend is available within the general study program. The stipend is open for appointment from September 1, 2026, or soon hereafter. The duration of the position is three years, and it is funded in the new European Research Council (ERC) Synergy grant on Store-and-Forward Energy grid (SAFEr Grid), which unlocks a new power grid architecture. This project will be held in collaboration with RWTH Aachen, Germany.
The position is offered in relation to the research group "Reliability of Power Electronic Converters" and the PhD Student will be positioned to the section for “Applied Power Electronic Systems”.
Your work tasks
Asynchronous grids (a-grids) decouple synchronous power systems into multiple compartments with energy routers acting as the bridge. This fundamentally departs from frequency acting as the global stability metric and instead focuses on energy routed between the a-grids. This requires substantial coordination of signals using cyber-physical modelling theories and internet connectivity integrated into the control of a-grids. However, there will be latency, packet drop-outs in the cyber layer that may trigger instability locally.
This poses the following key research questions for the power grid community:
- Without frequency, how can we ensure local stability of asynchronous grids in coordination with global power systems behaviour?
- How will the control interactions between power electronics within an asynchronous grid be
managed? - How will delay, link failure in communication layer affect local stability of asynchronous grids?
- How to mitigate cyber-induced issues and manage them to organize global system stability?
As this project departs fundamentally from frequency as a global stability metric, the aim of this PhD project is to firstly conceptualize and model new local stability metrics for asynchronous grids. This will require design of new control structures that coordinate power electronics using internet acting as the cyber layer. The control interactions and stability analysis under different delays, link failure and inconsistencies within the cyber layer must be studied with its implications on the asynchronous grid layer. Finally, these studies will be carried out within each and across asynchronous grids to improve the energy routing schemes and forecasting of energy buffers across them. These studies need to be carried out under dynamic as well as contingent conditions in power grids.
Your competencies
Applicants are required to have an excellent academic background with a master’s degree or equivalent in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Control theory, Cyber-physical systems, or any other related discipline, potentially with skills in Power Electronics. Applicants who are in the final phase of their master’s degree are also encouraged to apply but have to complete the master before starting the fellowship.
You have a solid academic foundation in power systems, control theory or power electronics, and an interest in working across disciplinary boundaries, including aspects of communication networks and cyber-physical systems. Experience with modelling and simulation tools such as MATLAB, PLECS or PSCAD is an advantage, as is familiarity with distributed control, communication in engineering systems, or smart energy technologies.
You are motivated to carry out research that combines theoretical development with system-level
understanding, and you are able to approach complex problems in a structured and analytical manner. You take responsibility for your own progress while contributing actively to collaborative research efforts, and you are comfortable working in an international and interdisciplinary environment.
You communicate clearly in English, both in writing and orally, and you are able to present your work to different audiences, including researchers from other disciplines and external collaborators.
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years.
