PhD Candidate in Single-Stage Power Supply Unit for next generation AI Datacenters
NTNU FAKULTET FOR INFORMASJONS- TEKNOLOGI OG ELEKTRONIKK
Norway, TRONDHEIM

This is NTNU

NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.

At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.

You will find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KHQjc4ndas&t=41s

About the position

Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? Do you have a background in electrical power engineering, and are you interested in high-density power electronics and industrial research? As a PhD candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate while collaborating closely with industry leaders, gaining valuable experience that qualifies you for a career in both academia and the high-tech industry.

The Department of Electric Energy (IEL) at NTNU is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a full-time (100%) PhD position for 3 years. You will join the research group Power Electronics and Electrical Machines (PEM) at IEL and work directly within an Innovation Project for the Industrial Sector (IPN) funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN).

A core feature of this position is close, hands-on collaboration with ELTEK Norway AS, integrating cutting-edge academic research with industrial product development and commercial deployment for hyper-scale AI data centers.

Our working environment is characterized by a friendly, supportive atmosphere, with regular gatherings such as professional meetings within the research group, shared lunches, and Friday coffee sessions to wrap up the week. These formal and informal occasions provide opportunities to exchange ideas, celebrate milestones, and strengthen connections. PhD candidates also arrange social activities, open to everyone who wishes to join, creating a welcoming and inclusive community.

Your immediate Line Manager will be the Head of Department.

About the project

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure and hyper-scale data centers has created unprecedented demands for electrical power conversion efficiency, power density, and dynamic response. Traditional two-stage power delivery architectures face limitations in maximizing efficiency and footprint. Next-generation AI data centers require innovative single-stage power supply units (PSUs) capable of stepping down grid voltages directly to isolated DC outputs with ultra-high efficiency and high power density.

As part of this IPN project, the candidate will bridge fundamental research and industrial application in close cooperation with engineering teams at ELTEK Norway AS. The project focuses on developing advanced single-stage conversion topologies utilizing wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors, high-frequency magnetics, and robust control strategies to achieve superior efficiency, high power density, and verified reliability.

The PhD candidate will investigate one or more of the following key areas:

  • High-density single-stage converter architectures and advanced modulation techniques for AI datacenter power delivery
  • Wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor device integration (SiC/GaN), switching behavior, and gate-drive optimization
  • High-frequency magnetic component design, electro-thermal modeling, and reliability-oriented design and testing methodologies

The research will be supervised by Associate Professor Subhadra Tiwari at the Department of Electric Energy, NTNU, in close co-supervision with power electronics experts from ELTEK Norway AS and Delta Electronics (Switzerland) AG.

Duties of the position

  • Carry out high-quality industrial and academic research within the framework described above.

About the position

The Department of Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is offering an exciting PhD position within the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, a national centre with a focus on applied artificial intelligence (AI) in the maritime sector.

The maritime industry is adopting AI technologies. The next decade will bring extensive digitization of operational data in yards, creating opportunities for more data-driven planning. AI can replace or supplement traditional planning approaches, which struggles to manage the uncertainty and variability that are inherent in complex engineer-to-order shipbuilding. Realizing the full potential of AI is both a technical and an integrative challenge. It requires combining what AI excels at, such as pattern recognition and processing data streams, with theories and methods for planning and logistics.

The PhD research will focus on AI-enhanced planning of operations in shipbuilding supply chains, examining how AI techniques can support decision-makers in analyzing real-time and historical data to better coordinate operators, equipment, and facilities, as well as manage operations across multiple projects and supply chain partners. A key part of this research is to investigate how AI can be integrated into planning methods and systems in supply chains, particularly how AI can anticipate disruptions, analyse trade-offs in tactical sourcing decisions, and contribute to improved supply chain performance.

You will join the Production Management Research Group at NTNU, which focuses on the design and planning of production and logistics systems. The research will be carried out together with industry and public partners in the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre. As part of a world-leading research community, you will investigate how AI can reshape planning and logistics in complex shipbuilding supply chains.

Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.

The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Erlend Alfnes.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

About the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre

About the doctoral project

The PhD project confronts the global imperative for adaptable, low‐carbon energy infrastructure by investigating a hybrid system that synergistically integrates different renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaic generation, hydrogen production, and storage alternatives with microgrid-driven power distribution. Through advanced modelling and optimization techniques, this research aims to identify optimum design and operational strategies that enhance system flexibility, improve resilience to variable supply and demand, and minimize environmental impact. By drawing on interdisciplinary expertise (spanning renewable energy engineering, power systems and energy market integration, stochastic multi-objective optimization, and data‐driven control methodologies) the project will establish a robust framework for coordinating electricity, heat, cooling, and hydrogen flows in distributed energy networks.

While the primary focus is on developing a scalable and economically viable energy management solution, potential case studies may include to illustrate real‐world applicability in a close collaboration with our international partner(s). In alignment with Energi21 as national strategic objectives for sustainable energy as well as international commitments to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, this PhD project aims to advance cutting-edge smart microgrid technologies by enhancing system flexibility and reliability, thereby making a significant contribution to the transition toward cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable energy infrastructures.
